Grow Green Beans for vegetarians using container gardening

Green Beans are one of the most popular vegetables in all cultures, be it in America, Europe or India. In India it is one of the most popular and healthy vegetables that is used in many Indian vegetarian cuisines, specially in vegetarian dishes.

There are many types of green beans that one can grow. In this blog, we will talk mainly about two different variety of beans, Pole and Bush beans.

You can grow beans in containers/pots be it a ceramic container or plastic container, choose the right container and right size. Picking good Organic Non-GMO Beans seeds is the first step, using Organic and Non-GMO is always a better choice, it will provide you with healthier produce. If you are growing pole beans, choose a bigger container/pot as pole beans can climb very tall even up to height of 8 feet as seen in the below picture. Choose the right potting mix for growing beans. Beans like cooler weather to thrive.  For pole beans, you will need a good cage for the beans to climb or you can build your own trellis. Make sure that the trellis that you build for your beans are sturdy. If they are not sturdy, then the beans flowers may drop at early stages and fruits may never develop. If you are using a tall cage for your pole beans, be sure to provide it adequate support so that the tower does not collapse when there are high winds or a storm.

Some of the common remedies for your vegetarian beans plants:

You can spray the beans plant with Neem oil spray on the bean plant leaves regularly. This will keep some of the garden pests away and keep the plant leaves shiny. Beans plants grow very fast, they are easy to grow and need little care except for in hot summer places, pests can become a issue. Using neem oil spray can help save the leaves and fruits. If you see diseased or yellow leaves, you can trim/prune the plant and remove the older/diseased leaves. New leaves will then produce fresh flowers and beans.

Banana peel powder is a good fertilizer and helps in producing bountiful flowers and well formed tasty fruits which in this case are beans.

You can also use boiled water with coriander seeds, fennel seeds and cummin seeds together and feed them to the plants in summer time, we have seen that it helps beans during the summer time. It is a good remedy for plants in summer time.

Also, Indians normally use ginger for making Indian chai and while making this, ginger peels that remain from this can be used for making ginger water for plants. If the peels from your cooking/tea/chai are too little, you can add more ginger to make boiled ginger water. Boil water and ginger for 20 minutes and then let the water cool down for sometime. You can use this boiled ginger water for your beans plants.

This is a excellent remedy for the plants in winter time when the weather outside is cold. We have seen it has helped the plants to keep producing vegetables/flowers through cooler weather. If you live in a country where the temperatures drops to freezing, it may be a good idea to move the plants indoors and still feed it with boiled ginger water.

Harvesting beans fresh is important and harvesting them regularly will also help the plant keep on producing new beans, giving you bountiful harvest throughout the season.
