Grow your own food using container gardening

Growing your own food is becoming more and more important these days for multiple reasons.  Container gardening can be a good hobby for few or it can be health making for others through healthy vegetable growing, it can be relaxation for some after long work day. Freshly grown vegetables are health givers, it can make a difference to once's overall health if eaten properly. Please consult your doctors if there are any restrictions. 

Select the vegetable or vegetables that you would like to grow in your garden space. The garden space can be a small terrace area in your apartment or balcony area of your apartment, or a garden area around your house. If your garden space is limited, you can grow simple herbs or simple vegetables like green beans that can be grown easily in smaller containers.

Whether your container garden space is small apartment terrace or a area around your house, make sure to make your garden storm proof/wind proof. Lighter pots/containers can fly/topple, tall cages can topple unless supported properly. 

Select the correct potting soil for your vegetable and good plant food for your vegetables. Organic potting mix, organic plant food along with organic fertilizers are always good to use for your container gardening as they will provide you with healthy vegetables. Using Organic Non-GMO seeds for growing your food is always a better choice.

Some of the common remedies for your vegetarian garden:

You can spray vegetable plants with Neem oil spray regularly. This will keep some of the garden pests away and keep the plant leaves shiny. Using neem oil spray can help save the leaves and fruits. If you see diseased or yellow leaves, you can trim/prune the plant and remove the older/diseased leaves. New leaves will then produce fresh flowers and fruits. 

Banana peel powder is a good fertilizer and helps in producing bountiful flowers and well formed tasty fruits. 

You can also use boiled water with coriander seeds, fennel seeds and cummin seeds together and feed them to the plants in summer time, we have seen that it helps beans during the summer time. It is a good remedy for plants in summer time.

Ginger is warming, Indians normally use ginger for making Indian chai and while making this, ginger peels that remain from this can be used for making ginger water for the plants. If the peels from your cooking/tea/chai are too little, you can add more ginger to it for making boiled ginger water. Boil water and ginger for 20 minutes and then let the water cool down for sometime. Once cooled you can use this boiled ginger water for vegetable plants like beans, bell peppers, green chilies and tomatoes. It can also be used for flower plants like Marigolds, Jasmine and Hibiscus. This is a excellent remedy for the plants in winter time when the weather outside is cold. We have seen it has helped the plants to keep producing vegetables/flowers through cooler weather. If you live in a country where the temperatures drops to freezing, it may be a good idea to move the plants indoors and still feed it with boiled ginger water.

Regarding container gardening itself, it is a joyous hobby which can be relaxing once you start doing it regularly. Even little thing like watering plants daily can relax one. 

Container gardening is good for people who are doing it for relaxation, want to grow their own food for better health or for people who want to start learning gardening.
